Airedale Academy is committed to providing high quality careers education advice and guidance which supports learners in developing an awareness of their skills, talents and areas of interest. We endeavour to help students with their career paths, supporting them to make informed choices about their future.
Information, advice and guidance is offered to students at key transition points including in Year 8 when making GCSE Option Choices. Parents and carers are invited to school for Options Evening before final choices are made.
Students are further supported in plans for when they leave school during Year 10 and 11 with information and advice around their Post 16 options. They also have the benefit of attending college taster days prior to making applications.
A wider programme of activities from Year 7 – 11 is also provided which include the school careers fair, mock interviews, university visits, enterprise days, workplace visits, assemblies with speakers from different industries and careers lessons within the Student Wellbeing curriculum.
Careers Advice and Guidance extends to our students in 6th form who complete the Progression Module + in Year 12 and receive support around next steps to university, theatre schools or apprenticeships.
The Careers Leader in school is Mrs T Chambers and the Careers Adviser is Mrs J Sergeant.

At Airedale Academy we are keen to raise aspirations for our students to consider Higher Education as a possibility for them. Currently with the support of Go Higher West Yorkshire we are providing students with a wide range of opportunities such as university visits, taster days, enterprise activities and projects with local employers. Activities have included a summer residential with local universities for Year 10 students, motivational presentations from external speakers, and a joint project with Castleford Academy and Engie learning about professional and technical roles in the Construction Industry.
This programme is led in school by Mrs Heptinstall. For more information see Go Higher
As a school we are continually building links with businesses in the local area to inform and inspire our students about job opportunities. We are introducing a programme of workplace visits for students in Key Stage 4 to support this.
Locally and nationally there continues to be a demand for people with skills and knowledge in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). STEM Careers are promoted widely through a range of activities in school. Activities have included the Big Bang Event (Fair for Science related careers), Medical Mavericks (hands on activities linked to jobs in Healthcare) and The Faraday Challenge (students compete on a robotics challenge). We have links with Wakefield College who offer inspirational activities in their STEM Plus Programme.
The Careers programme at Airedale is evaluated annually. Feedback from students is used to help us further develop our careers programme and to make sure that this is having a positive impact. Evaluation and planning for our Careers Programme is based on achieving the Gatsby Benchmarks which outline good practice for schools. See the link below for further information:https://www.goodcareerguidance.org.uk/the-benchmarks

Following the Gatsby Benchmarks we provide a range of trips, visits and on site activities to ensure that all our students experience encounters with colleges, universities and employers. Recent activities have included a trip to Burberry in Castleford where students saw garments being made, a visit to the Winding Wheel Harvester Restaurant where they were able to go into the kitchens and find out about working in Hospitality and a trip to Parliament in London, visiting the House of Commons. Forthcoming workplace visits include Amazon Warehouse, Ferrybridge MultiFuel Power Station, Warburtons and Burberry.
All students are supported to make applications and secure a place Post 16. In 2019 93.5% of Year 11 leavers progressed into Further Education or Employment with Training.
